Our Photonics and Optoelectronics lab is made up four bays, broken up by specialised field. These bays are separated with metal safety curtains to prevent any light contamination, and each have two floating, vibration resistant tables from Thorlabs.

Below are examples of experiments currently being run in each bay, but is by no means an exhaustive list of what is possible with our equipment.

For access to the lab, or for any general training, please contact the lab leader Dr Giancarlo Soavi, or their deputy Dr Syed Asad Hussain.  For training on any of the equipment, please contact the Principal User or their deputy for the listed equipment.

Bay 1

Principal User: Dr Ilya Goykhman


Optoelectronics is the study of how light effects electronic devices, in ways such as photoresistors or photovoltaic cells (solar cells).

Some of the equipment the use include;
Power Meters,
SMU (source Meter Units),
Photocurrent mapping.

Bay 2

Principal User: Dr Syed Asad Hussain

Optical Characterisation

A Z-scan has been designed for the optical Characterisation of graphene and other 2D materials.

Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy

The other half of this bay is designated for Ultrafast spectroscopy, Powered by a Chameleon Compact OPO Ti:Sapphire Laser and an APR pulseSelect Dual.

Bay 3

Principal User: Dr Giancarlo Soavi

Solid State Lasers

These are mode locked, solid state lasers, made from graphene.

Student Training Laser

We have a simplified gas laser which is used to teach our students all the basic principles of photonics.

Bay 4

Principal User: Dr Giancarlo Soavi

Fiber Lasers

These are mode locked, Fiber lasers, made from graphene.
